Veteran Bangladeshi all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan won the hearts of many during the second ODI against Afghanistan.
The incident took place in the 17th over of the game when Shakib Al Hasan was bowling to Rahmat Shah. Shah had hit a straight drive off Shakib’s bowling but the ball went on to hit the stumps. But the ball had kissed Shakib’s finger on its way. The on-field umpires could not come to a decision therefore they referred it to the third umpire. The replays on the big screen clearly showed that non striker Najibullah Zadran was out.

However, Shakib Al Hasan spoke to skipper Tamim Iqbal after which he took back his appeal and told the umpire that the ball did not touch his finger. Shakib wasn’t exactly sure if the ball hit his hand on its way through. By then Rahmat Shah had left the crease and walked to the pavilion. But after Shakib withdrew his appeal, Rahmat returned to the crease.
Shakib’s decision won the hearts of many and the fans all across the globe applauded his generous gesture. Opener Rahmat Shah in the end managed to score 52 off 71 deliveries before he was dismissed by Taskin Ahmed.
Bangladesh eventually defended the total and thrashed the visitors by 88 runs. The hosts have now taken a 2-0 lead in the three match ODI series.
Earlier batting first, Bangladesh posted a massive total of 306/4 on the board. Opener Litton Das reaped 136 runs off just 126 deliveries which consisted of 16 fours and 2 sixes. Wicket-keeper batsmen Mushfiqur Rahim also added 86 runs. Fifties from Najibullah Zadran and Rahmat Shah were not enough for them to seal the victory as they were bowled out for 218.
This is Bangladesh’s 10th win out of 14 in the ICC CWC Super League. With this win, Bangladesh now has 100 points to themselves at a net run rate of 0.422. They have gone past England who have 95 points to themselves and have occupied the first position. The top seven teams along with hosts India will earn direct qualification for the 2023 ICC ODI World Cup. It looks like that the Bangla tigers have now cemented their spot in the upcoming mega event.
